When you first throw on The Blood Flowed Like Wine, you might think, “This sounds like Rome (the Danger Mouse album).” Check yourself, though. Rome came out in 2011. Guess how long Federale’s been doing it? Since 2005. Now who sounds like whom? It’s been a while since a solid, non-pretentious concept album has come around, but Federale’s managed to concoct the ideal balance between scene-setting filler and song-length singles. From the opening track, “Juarez Wedding,” there is no mistaking where this train is headed: straight back to the 1800s in all its cowboy glory. “Wedding” segues right into the eponymous track, immediately evoking a Doors-esque vibe with fuzzy guitars and echoing vocals. As the album unfolds, it’s fairly easy to visualize barren wastelands, a lone rider, and some serious bloodletting. It’d be a bit of an oversimplification to call this album a soundscape, but it would be understandable: only two of the songs contain lyrics. The rest of the vocalizing comes from mournful wailing or iconic whistling. Picking out a single track to laud is difficult due to the album’s demand that you take it as a collective work rather than an assembly individual pieces, but suffice it to say the final track, “FINE,” is a forceful, summarizing ending to a cathartic trip courtesy of Federale. - Charles Trowbridge

about

A murder ballad featuring Alex Mass of the Black Angels on vocals.

lyrics

I’m not one of the Faithful,
I’ve only come for your wine.
And I’d give my soul, for an endless cup.
Show me where to sign.

The preacher grew horns,
his head like a goat.
He passed me the cup
and the blood flowed like wine
as it poured down my throat.

For your mortal soul.
This cup that never goes empty
He slaughtered the flock
and their blood flowed like wine
and I sliced my own neck.

Into a crooked smile.
From ear to ear.
Down my chest,
The blood flowed like wine
until I was dry.

“Well the joke is on you.
I’ve sinned all of my life.
I’ve lied and robbed and cheated and butchered my wife.
So I'll drink from this cup, and soon I'll be lit.
But the wine flowed like blood
through the hole that I cut in my neck.”

I’ve reaped what I’ve sown
and this is my lot.
And I’m given the curse,
of an unending thirst,
but can’t quench my desire.

So the joke is on me.
The emptiness mine.
My body’s a cup that can’t hold a soul.
A withered old vine.

And the blood flowed through the aisles of the church.
And the souls filled the steeple.
They opened the doors,
and the blood flowed wine
from all the dead people.
